About Zack

Zack grew up in Malibu, California and started surfing at three years old.

At age 14 Zack won the United States longboard championship at first point Malibu.  At age 16 Zack earned a sponsorship contract from Oxbow France and turned pro.

Summers were spent lifeguarding for the state of California and also traveling abroad for professional surf competitions and photo shoots in far flung destinations like Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Europe, South America, Indonesia and South Africa to name a few.

At 19 years old Zack placed third in the 1999 Oxbow World Longboard Championships.
He also  graced the cover of multiple surf magazines around the world.

Zack continued a 15 year professional surfing career where he placed in the top 10 or higher for over a decade.

Zack was able to experience world travel and other cultures at a young age. He would share his love for surfing in Europe teaching corporate executives how to ride waves and excel in the water.

Zack moved to Maui  in 2003 for the love of surfing giant waves at Jaws and Honolua bay.

In 2009 he founded Zack Howard surf and began teaching full time. 

Zack is passionate about creating authentic surf experiences for his  guests and has hand selected a team of professional instructors to carry out the best surf lessons around.

  • My wife booked my 11yr old son and myself for beginner lessons here, easy online booking then texting communication to a nice uncrowded spot. Sarah (Zack's wife) was our instructor and she was great with my boy. His ocean confidence wasn't real high but she put him at ease and he was catching wave after wave.
